Creating opportunities for girls and women in sport

As part of its commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities, Special Olympics Morocco organized the Northern Caravan – She Belongs, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness and engaging families around the participation of girls and women in sport.

Across several stops in Northern Morocco, the Caravan created spaces for dialogue with mothers, families and local communities to discuss the opportunities that sport can offer girls and women with intellectual disabilities.

Connecting, raising awareness and creating opportunities

The sessions addressed different topics related to the participation of girls and women in sport, including self-confidence, independence, mobility, the role of families and the importance of their support.

In some communities, families may still have concerns about girls participating in sports, travelling or taking part in activities outside the family environment. The Northern Caravan provided a space for listening and dialogue, helping address these concerns while highlighting the benefits of sport for confidence, personal development and social participation.

Health Messengers also contributed to the discussions by sharing their experiences and raising awareness among families about the importance of creating supportive environments for athletes’ health and well-being.

Families at the heart of change

Inclusion also starts with families.

Through She Belongs, Special Olympics Morocco aims to strengthen the role of families as essential partners in enabling girls and women to participate in sport and take an active role in their communities.

The Caravan also helped build connections with local stakeholders and raise awareness of the opportunities available through Special Olympics.

A step towards lasting inclusion

The Northern Caravan is part of a broader effort to increase the participation of women and girls within the Special Olympics movement in Morocco.

Beyond workshops and discussions, the goal is to create more opportunities for women with intellectual disabilities to participate, lead, speak up and play an active role in their communities.

Through She Belongs, Special Olympics Morocco continues to work with families, communities and partners to build an environment where every girl and every woman can find her place in sport.

Because every girl belongs in sport. Every woman has a voice. And every community has a role to play in inclusion.
